Behind the Design for Downtown Knoxville Frothy Monkey

Downtown Knoxville has been on our mind for a long time. Finding the perfect place felt like it took even longer. We’re grateful to be in such a historic location and excited to welcome neighbors back to the Kress building!

Historic Preservation

During the build out, we repurposed some original features, but many of the historic details were lost to the years. However, the work of recent owners and historic preservation groups brought back the original exterior including the red “H.S. Kress & Co 5-10-25 Cent Store” sign and glass mezzanine windows.

Inside, structural updates required new support beams. The original beams found a new purpose as bar shelves and new stairs to the mezzanine. These beams may be almost 114 years old! Contractors believe they were harvested from the Smoky Mountains back in the 1920’s. Now, the beams have been milled and cut to serve as bar shelves and the stairs to the mezzanine.

Historic column supports with ornamental capitals are still visible on each side of the cafe, and original brick lines the back wall. The only interior view of Strong Alley (Graffiti Alley)  can be seen on the back windows of our space, creating a unique vibe for the cocktail bar.

Design Choices

The incredible height of the ceilings in this space posed a unique challenge and opportunity for this cafe’s design. We’ve transformed the entrance of the building to include partially covered outdoor seating, a recessed doorway, and an interior mezzanine. In turn, lowering the ceiling height for the entrance and making the entry and coffee bar cozier.

“We have dreamed about this set-up for other locations,” managing partner Ryan Pruitt says, “Each time it didn’t work out and we were a bit heartbroken, so it’s been in the back of my head for a long time.”

Black hexagonal tile and sage green penny tile create texture and warmth in the outdoor seating area, and flow into the entrance of the cafe to the coffee bar. Rich black and white marble countertops and custom finished matte black La Marzocco Strada espresso machine integrate perfectly to the color scheme.

Interior colors were inspired by Director of Hospitality, Brittany Russler’s trip to Morocco in 2019.

Russler says, “You might think of busy mosaic tiles when you think of Morocco, but I pulled our color palette from one specific restaurant. It was all jade green. The richness of a singular color made the space feel mellow and soothing.” As new life makes its way into the cafe, Russler imagines more organic materials being added like plants and local art to cozy up the atmosphere.

As guests move to the main dining area the vibe shifts as the ceiling rises and more energy is moving in this central area. A spacious main dining room is great for groups and family meals. Thoughtful seating options like banquets, booths, and standard tables are available to meet people’s needs, no matter the occasion.

Guests looking for a more intimate setting, remote work, or a simple coffee stop can enjoy ample outlets and smaller tables on the mezzanine. This new interior level provides an overlook of the cafe, as well as Gay Street.

Frothy Monkey Knoxville’s view of the coffee bar from mezzanine stairs.
Vibrant wallpaper on the back wall of Frothy Monkey’s new location in Knoxville, TN.

Looking into the cafe, over the mezzanine, guests will get a great view of the bar. Cheeky wallpaper, gleaming glass bottles, and incredible marble countertops will spark some conversation. A soffit  above the bar creates another inviting area with an ADA accessible bar top, floating wood shelves (made from original beams), and soft light from the back windows.

Russler says, “I want guests to be curious about what’s happening in the bar area. It’s got texture, and contrast, and just feels good. The excitement of the bar is really well balanced by the dark tile in the entry. It helps draw your eyes across the space”

Local Collaborators

It takes a neighborhood to build our all-day cafes. A well deserved shout out to all of the friends, partners, and collaborators that made this location possible. To name a few…

Cooper Collins, friend of Frothy Monkey, built our gorgeous Boos block table tops.

Hazelwood Audio did an incredible job bringing sleek integrated sound systems.

DIA and Denark Construction’s collaborative spirit and hard work to build out this beautiful space.

How to Host a Latte Art Competition

Posted by on July 7, 2022

Looking for a guide to help you host a latte art competition? We have it! Our operations and roasting company team have compiled their best advice and tips to hosting a successful and fun event at your shop.

Looking for a quick reference? Check out the bottom of this blog for a downloadable checklist and (coming soon!) a PDF version of this guide.

What is a Latte Art Competition?

A Latte Art Throwdown is a competition to determine which competitor can create the most technically accurate and visually impressive latte art within the provided parameters. Competitive latte art circuits have official rules and regulations and are extremely popular in Europe, Asia, and North America. The official World Latte Art Championship is held by the Specialty Coffee Association

Latte art competitions are about more than awards and accolades. These events build community and goodwill within an industry which often intimidates new baristas.

The Frothy Monkey Roasting Company’s Lead Educator and Technician, Ryan Bledsoe, says, “A latte art competition is about a few things. It’s a gateway for young baristas to grow their passion for coffee, a way to break down barriers and build relationships in the coffee community, and have some fun with friends and coworkers.”

Celebration as Winner is announced at Latte Art Competition
Spectators and competitors rejoice as the 2022 Pride Latte Art Competition Winner is announced.

Excluding 2020, Frothy Monkey has hosted the Nashville Pride Latte Art Throwdown since 2018. This  recurring competition allows us to connect with other coffee professionals, support a local cause, and share some #FrothyLove in our community. We love creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for any competitor. Just like Frothy Monkey’s cafes, these events are a place where all are welcome.

Latte art competitions bring us closer to our neighbors and fellow coffee connoisseurs. Baristas of all experience levels are invited to join. We love seeing the creativity and skill of our competitors as they work with incorporating color, alternative milks, and themed rounds.

An event like this is challenging for hosts, too! We learned by trial and error. Our hope is that this guide is a resource for hosting your first competition, and a tool to avoid mistakes we made!

Are you ready?

Here’s what you’ll need to host your own epic throwdown.

  1. Coffee + Equipment
  2. Venue + Space Requirements
  3. Staffing
  4. Schedule + Event Details
  5. Marketing + Promotion
  6. Make it Fun (Vibey Extras)

1. Coffee + Equipment

First and foremost, you need the correct equipment and products. Most of these are standard in coffee shops and espresso bars.

Coffee

It’s a given. You need quality coffee to pull shots for your lattes. At Frothy Monkey, we use our Howler espresso roast. We also provide all milks and milk alternatives. This keeps competitors focused on creating the best art instead of logistics. We source our whole milk from Hatcher Dairy Farms and use barista product lines from Planet Oat, Milkademia, and Almond Breeze for dairy alternatives.

Espresso Machine

There are dozens of different machines you can use to pull your shot, but we highly recommend a dual hWe highly recommend a dual head espresso machine. This allows your barista on bar the opportunity to pull multiple shots at once, and keeps the competition moving. In our shops we use a La Marzocco’s Strada Espresso Machine.

Grinder with Hopper

Nothing will slow you down more than having to grind coffee without a hopper! Load up the grinder with your chosen espresso beans and keep the shots rolling.  Once your house barista on bar is dialed in, they should not have to fuss with settings to keep pulling perfect shots.

Drinkware or Your Chosen Latte Vessels

Have plenty of glassware for your competitors! If you’re strictly focusing on latte art, you need a variety of cup sizes for your guests. While baristas most often practice on a standard 8oz, 12oz, and 16oz cup, this could be any size.

Moriah from Frothy Monkey Roasting Company says, “You can really challenge your baristas by incorporating unique vessels. It’s really anything goes. You could try a ramekin, handmade pottery, a wine glass, a shoe…It’s ultimately up to the host.”

Stainless Steel Steaming Pitchers

An essential piece of barware for your competition is stainless steel steaming pitchers. You may allow your participants to bring their own, or use a provided pitcher.

Refrigeration

To ensure your latte art is perfect, refrigeration is essential! Cold milk will allow you to create the best latte foam (and keep things from spoiling!). There is a lot of fun science behind this. In short, the milk foam, created by steaming, will perform best when the milk fat is cold.

A bar cooler or small refrigerator should work. You’ll just need to prioritize space for the gallons or pints your baristas need.

Sink + Cleaning Supplies

You will really run through dishes during a throwdown! Be sure you’ve got all of the cleaning essentials for your barista on bar, a dishwasher, and extras for messy masterminds that are competing.

Dish Staff
You want a quick turn around on dirty dishes, schedule someone for the event, specifically!

Towels
Wet and dry towels need to be at the ready for wiping down surfaces, counters, steam wands – you name it!

Wet Sink
It’s in health codes, but it’s also super useful. Having a sink at the ready will make rinsing and setting dirty dishes aside much easier. This can also aid in preparing your competitors with clean and disinfected hands before the first pour.

Cleaning Spray/ Disinfectant
Be ready with antibacterial hand soap at the sink and your standard cleaning solution for spills or accidents.

Glass Rinser
These are a standard on coffee bars and cocktail bars alike. If you can get your hands on one, you’ll save a lot of time rinsing glasses between shots and mitigating the inevitable “oops!” moments when something goes awry.

Mop + Bucket
Mistakes happen! While we never want someone to drop their beautiful latte art, it could happen. Be sure to have your mop and bucket ready with the appropriate cleaning solution.

2. Venue + Space Set-Up

Whether you’re a full-service cafe, or coffee bar, you need a venue! Here are some areas to designate for the competition.

Work Station + Bar

As we outlined in the first section, you need a bar that’s ready to handle the madness of multiple baristas! Secure extra glassware or selected containers, make room for multiple baristas to pour, and purchase the necessary coffee and equipment listed above.

Host Stand

There’s nothing better than a friendly face when you enter an event. Even if your guests are not competing, make sure all are welcomed. Direct guests to the proper seating or standing areas and let them know the evening’s schedule. If competitors are arriving, direct them to the check-in station.

Check-In Station

This post can be combined with the host stand if needed. Here you will have a POS station or cash box on hand to collect payment and a list to collect contact information like names, emails, shop affiliation, and pronouns. For our latte art competitions, we donate the proceeds to a relevant charity based on the event affiliation.

As an added precaution, remind the competitors of the schedule and requirements for each round. Though they should have access to this information prior to the event, it is best to repeat important timeline items and answer any questions.

Judge’s Table

It wouldn’t be a competition without lovely judges to determine your winners! For latte art, keep the judge’s table close to your bar. Avoid using high top tables so judges can view the art from above.

Keep your judges happy! When a judge’s table is engaged, the rest of the crowd will feed off of that positive energy. Use your hospitality knowledge to anticipate their needs and provide service like you would a guest. Water and other beverages are always an added benefit for the table.

Seating

For accessibility, tired feet, or a place to enjoy a mid-competition snack, keep some seating available. This gives you the opportunity to serve food or drinks if you have a kitchen or bakery case. Additional sales can help offset the cost of the event.

Standing Room

When the competition heats up, guests will want to be in on the action! Choose a good space for guests to stand and observe. This will keep the coffee bar from getting too congested. If necessary, address the crowd before competition on etiquette in the space or mark the area with signage or tape.

Hot Tip: Set up an overhead live stream view of the lattes at the judges table and project them on a wall or large screen. This view, like an overhead cooking shot, will help the audience view the latte art without crowding the judges.

Optional: One Point of Sale

This register could be combined with the check-in station, or a separate location.  Keep at least one register open if you serve menu items during competition. You may also have some event swag, bakery items, or other goods available for guests to purchase.

3. Staffing

Event Coordinator

It’s important that the whole team contributes, but we advise one person to be your event coordinator. This could be an operations member, a location manager, or a seasoned team member. They should be organized, reliable, and not afraid to give direction. While you want them to oversee the event as a whole, your coordinator will also need to trust your employees and delegate tasks. Trusting employees with key roles can help improve employee satisfaction and encourage growth.

Barista on Bar

One of your most important members is your house barista behind the bar. They are responsible for pulling consistent shots for your competitors and maintaining a clean work space. This barista should execute consistent espresso shots with good crema. Crema is your canvas for latte art, so it needs to be great!

Aside from technical skill, they should have some personality. The ability to connect with a multitude of people will make this position fun. They will be front and center with competitors and should help them feel comfortable and welcome in your shop. This barista will be behind the bar for quite some time, so endurance is something to consider, too.

At the Door

At your host stand, you should have someone interacting with guests! When someone walks in without knowing about the competition, you need a welcoming face to assure them and explain their options..

MC/ Host

For a latte art throwdown, your MC should be someone who is confident on a microphone, and engaged in the event. They will announce rounds, competitors and themes while guiding the crowd through the event. They are also responsible for keeping track of the competition bracket.

Make sure their personality and experience matches the intended atmosphere. If it’s a high-stakes competition, choose someone you know can ease tension. For a friendly neighborhood throwdown, find someone that can brighten a room and keep the party going.

Judges

Consider your theme and your industry connections when inviting judges to participate! We suggest you invite three members of your industry from outside of your stores.

Judges should come from a mixture of disciplines to keep judging interesting. At minimum, judges should have a basic understanding of latte art. Baristas, coffee bar and cafe owners, roasters, even artists would be great to have on board.

Judging Criteria

While there are Rules + Regulations for official World Latte Art Competitions, our judges score based on visual assessment. In a basic round, the following are considered: quality of milk foam, clarity of design, contrast between ingredients, level of difficulty, overall impression.

You may choose to make a scoresheet, but in this setting, we typically have judges point to their choice between two.

Service + Kitchen Staff

Is your kitchen going to be open during the competition? The answer is up to you. We keep our kitchens open to maximize the guest experience. Between rounds, or before the competition starts, audience members may need something to fill their bellies. This includes cocktails, food, and bakery items.

Service staff and kitchen staff are essential if you offer food and beverages. Staff up appropriately.

4. Schedule + Event Details

Rounds

Determine how many rounds you want to run. Each round should provide a different challenge. It could be the container you’re pouring into, the milk or milk alternative required, or artistic additions. We often plan five rounds, with the last round as a challenging staple for all baristas, like a cortado.

The time needed to complete each round will vary depending on the number of competitors. We suggest between 30 – 45 min per round to allow enough time for pulling shots, pouring art, and judging. When rounds become too long, you may lose interest or momentum, so keep things running smoothly and quickly.

Schedule

Any well-run event needs a schedule. It may seem simple, but it will help your guests, your staff and your sanity. Your Event Coordinator  should create this schedule and review it with the whole team.

Be prepared for on the fly changes! Things can get a little wiley with competitions. Use your hospitality skills to pivot and continue your event.

Sign-Up Limit + Bracket

Set a limit for the number of competitors you want to compete. This will vary based on the size of your space and the time allotted for the event. With too many participants, you may run too far over time. Let competitors know in your advertising how many spots are available and how to sign up.

Create bracket configurations before your event. If you have the limit at 16, build brackets for 14, 12, 10, etc. With these tools already in place, it will be an easy transition with cancellations or unfilled spaces.

When registration closes, the list of competitors should be shared with the MC so they can build the bracket and begin announcements. We like to display our brackets on large foam boards, or white boards for everyone to see during the event.

Set up + Tear Down Time

Plan time for set-up and tear-down. You may need one to two hours. This may require you to temporarily close, but it will make your event run much smoother and avoid uncomfortable dining experiences for your guests.

To mitigate the disgruntled customer coming in during set-up, advertise a temporary closing on social media, event posters, and customer interactions throughout the week leading up to your event.

Requirements for Participants

Requirements for participants are very minimal for our competitions. We only require basic barista skills needed to create a latte and an entry fee. You don’t have to be a lead barista, or an award winning employee to come out and participate.

Consider things like closed-toed shoes for safety, or asking participants to pull their hair back if it is long, and the basic clothing requirements like shoes, shirt, etc. for health and safety reasons.

Theme

This is the FUN part – aside from the competition of course! We love hosting our competitions as a part of Nashville Pride, so we incorporate the pride flag and colorful themes throughout our marketing. You can make this a celebration for a holiday, a season, a certain person or just because.

Here are some fun themes to help get your creative juices flowing.

  • Dolly Parton – Incorporate millennial pink, sparkles, country music, and a philanthropic donation to children’s reading programs
  • Christmas – Red and Green, baby! Bring on the Christmas tree art, toy drive donations, and classic Christmas music.
  • Secret Garden – Bring out the floral decorations, latte art with flowers and leaves, tea time or picnic food!
  • Your Favorite Philanthropy/ Non-Profit/ Cause – Build your latte throwdown around a cause that is important to your brand or business. Partner with your community organization to bring this event to life!

Example Schedule

Here we have provided a sample schedule from one of our latte art competitions. This formula allowed 45 minutes for the first round (since it is the largest in a bracket) and to help get everyone in the groove. From there we bump it down to 30 minutes to keep things hustling. This was based on a 30 person bracket.

  • 4:00 PM – Set-Up
  • 6:00 PM – Doors Open – Registration
  • 6:30 PM – Round 1 / Challenge 1 (Freestyle)
  • 7:15 PM – Round 2 / Challenge 2
  • 7:45 PM – Round 3 / Challenge 3
  • 8:15 PM – Round 4 / Challenge 4
  • 8:30 PM – Final Round / Challenge 5
  • 9:00 PM – Awards
  • 10:00 PM – Close

5. Marketing + Promotion

We approach our latte art competitions with a mixture of organic marketing efforts. This portion of your event planning heavily depends on the size and scope of your event. Here are some of our best suggestions for getting the word out.

Social Media

An easy and effective way to start the buzz, is to get the word out on social media. Your Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok…all of these platforms are essentially free advertising if you take the time to post!

Graphics + Videos

Video and clear infographics are a win-win for both you and your audience. Video content helps viewers retain more 95% of your message when they watch it in a video, as compared to 10% retention from an image. So, make sure to have some fun with it! It doesn’t have to be a blockbuster film to get the attention of your audience. Film a spoken invitation by your event coordinator, a view of the competition space, or one of your employees talking about the event to get the convo started.

If you’re pressed for time, be sure to design a poster or event announcement. Old school methods still work! Look for community boards, send an email or text to invite people you know, and hang your posters in your space. If you’re a part of Facebook groups for your area and industry, make a post there, too.

Sign Up Link for Baristas

Create a form with integrated payment. Include this sign-up on your social media or website. To avoid no-show contestants, we suggest collecting payment online. People are more likely to show if they have already made a monetary commitment.

If you’re not able to collect payment online, simply plan 30 minutes prior to the first pour for registration and payment out of the way.

Link to Event Information

Create aCreate a blog post or web page for your event. Include all important information for the event including the date, time, location, participant requirements, rounds, prizes, etc. Link to this post in your feed, groups, pages, and stories to spread the word.

Tagging and Promoting Competitors, Judges, Product Sponsors, etc.

When you’re posting on your social platforms, tag important participants. If this event is fundraising or building awareness to a certain organization, include them. Tag your judges, your competitors or sponsors of the event.

Community + Strategic Partners

Check in on your community partners, strategic partners, and suppliers to get them in on the fun. Extend an invitation to participate and mention your interest in event sponsorship or prize donations. You may be surprised at the response! If there is a philanthropic element to your event, these businesses may make a monetary or prize donation to support your cause. If the event promotes something in the businesses demographic or community, they may share it on social media as well.

Direct Invitation

Are there baristas or shop owners you want to connect with? Direct invitation is a great way to build relationships in the coffee community and get more competitors registered. Reach out via email, or direct message their shop on social media to extend a friendly invitation.

Event Calendars

Find the movers and shakers in your community and get on their website’s calendar! This may require some lead time, so investigate online community event calendars at least 4 weeks before your event. Submissions often require, date, time, short and long descriptions and ticket/admission information. A great example of this in the Nashville area is Now Playing Nashville.

6. Vibey Extras

Everyone loves a little something for their hard work!

Prizes, Gift Bags, Merchandise, etc.

Options are endless when it comes to your prizes. These could be donated cash or gift items from community partners, or bags put together from your own company’s merchandise. We recommend a gift bag for each judge and a prize for first, second and third place in the competition.

Create event specific merchandise like T-shirts or coffee mugs or keep it simple by including your standard merchandise. In the past we included gift cards, coffee syrups, bags of coffee, t-shirts, tumblers, and mugs. Have some fun with it! Depending on the theme, almost any prize could be applicable.

Hot Tip!: While there is quiet time between rounds, keep your crowd engaged with an activity. Use extra prizes to create a raffle or trivia prizes between rounds.

DJ, Live Music or Curated Music Playlist

Hiring a DJ or Live Musician is one of our favorite things to include at our competitions. It’s a great way to engage with other businesses and create a fun and friendly atmosphere.

If space or a budget don’t allow for hiring talent, consider creating a playlist with your event staff. If there’s one music guru in your group, maybe they’ll take charge. However you organize it, we always love a fresh playlist.

Hot tip!: Creating an event playlist is a great way to give audience members and competitors a “take home” experience. Create a QR code linked to your playlist and attendees can re-visit the playlist whenever they want!

Girl smiling and laughing with winning raffle ticket.

Decoration

For our competitions, we run with the motto less is more. Your space may dictate how large or small you want to go with your decor. It’s important create comfortable spaces where guests don’t feel overwhelmed.

Some ideas from our past competitions would be a banner, a balloon arch, or small table settings. Colorful seasonal flowers or table tents (a great place to place a QR code!), help to define seating spaces without taking over.

Recap: 2022 Pride Latte Art Throwdown

Posted by on June 28, 2022

We couldn’t have asked for a better turnout for our 2022 Pride Latte Art Competition. This year was full of amazing talent – from true beginners to seasoned baristas! Sixteen competitors poured their way through five rounds to find this year’s champion, Lexi Jackson from Frothy Monkey 12South Nashville.

The competition began with eight pairs of competitors showing off their favorite freestyle art. Classic patterns like the heart, tulip, and rosetta came out to play! Criteria for judges included element contrast, creativity, difficulty of design, and overall execution.

Remaining competitors advanced to the rainbow round – a Frothy classic for our Pride Throwdown! Baristas must create latte art on a milk base by incorporating colored food dye. One practice pour was allowed for all competitors to practice their rainbow techniques.

Next, we pushed the envelope a bit more by challenging competitors to show off their skills with alternative milk from Planet Oat Cafe Creations. Their line of oat milk for baristas froths beautifully, and is so tasty!

After alternative milks, we were down to our final two competitors for the cortado round. Lexi Jackson from 12South Nashville Frothy Monkey and Joey Arlene from Sump Coffee were free to choose their design, but the size of the pour made this tricky!

The final judging revealed Lexi Jackson as our winner! We were happy to present our first and second place winners with sponsored gifts from La Marzocco, Created Co., Nash TN, Frothy Monkey Roasting Company, and Planet Oat. Lexi also took home our grand prize from Lightning 100 – two tickets to AmericanaFest 2022.

Sending a BIG ‘Thank You’ to our wonderful judges Brooke Wolfe (Elixr Coffee), Wes Cheatwood (Crema + Matryoshka), and Adrianna Flax (LGBT Chamber) for coming out to participate! We were so happy to see representation from the Nashville coffee community and the LGBT Chamber.

In a combination of proceeds from the Latte Art Throwdown ($160) and Pride Coffee Crawl ($96) we raised $256 for the Tennessee Equality Project. A matching donation of $96 from our friends at Oatly, brings this total to $352. Thank you to our competitors, guests, and friends of Frothy for making this donation possible. Special thanks to our friends at Matryoska for organizing this year’s Pride Coffee Crawl.

About Frothy Monkey Birmingham

Caretakers of the Space

We are so grateful to be a part of the Birmingham community. We recognize the familiarity many residents have with this storefront from its long run as The Urban Standard, so it was important to us to preserve certain design and structural elements. Our goal with this space, and all of Frothy’s cafes, is to preserve the character of the building while creating meaningful spaces and new experiences for the communities we serve.

“We were given the gift of this building with so much character.”, says Brittany Russler, Director of Hospitality at Frothy Monkey. “We have to recognize so many guests of the previous business, Urban Standard, know this space, and have wonderful memories here. There’s comfort in maintaining some familiar pieces of that history for local guests.”

Window Seating
New Cocktail Bar

Intentional + Inclusive

Frothy Monkey is intentional with the spaces that we create for our guests beyond paint and wallpaper. It matters where outlets are placed for remote work and where we have larger tables for family meals. It matters where you’re seated for a date night. It matters when guests visit Frothy Monkey and they know there is a place for them, no matter the reason.

In our all-day cafe, you’ll find a different level of service. We offer table service to everyone to connect with guests and provide the best possible experience. Whether you’re here for 10 minutes, or two hours – we’re here to make your day a little brighter.

The Patio

We’ve expanded seating options to include a new 1,400 sq ft semi-covered outdoor patio. It is perfect for happy hour, a sunny brunch, or romantic dinner. There are a multitude of seating options like the work bar, adirondack chairs for post-work hangouts and cozy corners for catching up. Outdoor heaters and fans will help manage changing seasons, too!

Stir Up Something Fun

We hope you notice another new addition to the space – our fun and funky bar! Located at the back of the main ‘lobby’ area, you’ll see a fun play on vintage themes with milk glass fixtures and multiple patterns and textures in the tile and wallpaper. We cannot wait to serve up your favorite libations, but we are still waiting for our liquor license. Stay up to date on the status of our license by following us on Instagram @frothymonkey

New Signature Coffees from Frothy Monkey Roasting Company

Posted by on May 11, 2022

The Signature Coffee line at Frothy Monkey is getting a facelift and new additions.

Introducing two new members of the Frothy Monkey Roasting Company’s Signature Coffee line – Howler and Midshift. We can’t wait to get these two coffees in your hands or in your cup! Patience and lots of #FrothyLove was poured into the creation of these additions to the Frothy Monkey family of coffees. We’re proud to offer a new espresso roast and half caff option to our customers in our Nashville, Franklin, and Chattanooga cafes, Coffee Perks members, and to our wholesale and online customers.

As a part of this new launch, we’ve also revamped our Signature Coffee Bag Designs and renamed some Frothy classics. French is now Brute, and Unwind is now Eventide! Read on to find out more about these exciting updates.

New Signature Coffees

Howler – An Elevated Espresso Roast

12South has been our workhorse coffee for drip, espresso and cold brew for many years. Once we started using Cold Brew blend for our kegged and canned Frothy Monkey Cold Brew Coffee, it wasn’t long before we set our sights on developing a coffee specifically for espresso.

We started with a natural Brazil and a washed Peruvian coffee. Because coffee availability changes seasonally, the blend will change over time but retain the same tasting notes. Our goal was to create a chocolatey and smooth taste profile with subtle fruit notes. We roasted it specifically for a more balanced, approachable shot that decreases the sharp acidic and bitter notes we tasted while brewing other coffees as espresso. What we created is a smooth experience that pairs perfectly with milk.

The roasting development for Howler took about a month, and was made in small test batches. It challenged our roaster’s and came with a lot of trial and error while we dialed in the correct ratios. These tests included experiments in blending the coffee beans pre-roast or post-roast, ratio variance, and roast time. The process was drawn out further because each batch needed rest for 5-7 days before our roasters could taste the product.

Now that ratios are dialed in and larger batches can be roasted, we have already started serving Howler in our espresso drinks at Frothy Monkey cafes in Nashville, Franklin, and Chattanooga. If you’re a regular and you recognize the taste of your favorite 12South coffee, you may have noticed! The main difference is that Howler is less acidic, but still so delicious. Because Howler is roasted “lower and slower” it reduces that acidic punch and blends well with your favorite milk option or provides a smoother experience on its own.

So, why “Howler” you say? Naming this espresso blend was so fun. We tried some word play with Nashville being the Music City, but things like “harmony” and “melody” didn’t fit. We played with location titles and street names and ultimately leaned into our name. So how can we use a monkey name in a cool and modern way?

When someone threw out “Howler Monkey”, we loved it. Ironically, Howler monkeys are native to Central & South America where a lot of our coffees are imported from and it was a great way to convey the  energy espresso gives you with an expressive “howl”. Our production team members have even started “howling” every time we roast a batch.

Midshift – A Half Caff Coffee Blend

We’re ecstatic to bring a new half caff option to the line of Frothy Monkey Signature Coffees. Without sacrificing flavor and quality, we developed Midshift to offer a more low-key experience for those who want a little afternoon kick, or coffee to sip on through the whole day.

Our friends in the specialty coffee industry inspired and supported us through the development of our half caff roast. Our partnership with Swiss Water Decaf had already produced great results in our Eventide decaf roast and gave us the confidence to pursue a half caff option.

We used our chemical-free, decaf Swiss Water Process coffee and blended it with a washed Ethiopian coffee. The bright and juicy flavor components of the Ethiopian, balanced out the darker cocoa notes from the Swiss Water Decaf.

We combine both coffees in a 50/50 blend, after roasting and cooling them separately. This is why you may notice some color differences amongst the beans when you open a bag of Midshift.

For the name we wanted to evoke the feeling of shifting gears, not fully slowing down, and not ramping yourself up. That afternoon coffee that will get you through the day without keeping you up at night. This coffee is perfect for the folks who are caffeine sensitive, but still want to enjoy a really tasty cup with a little more kick than a full decaf. We also found it to taste amazing with fruit forward desserts, like strawberry pie!

New Names for Old Classics

French is now, Brute!

French Roast has been a staple in the Frothy Monkey Signature line for some time now, and we couldn’t be more proud of how delicious it is. It’s perfect in its approachability and its lovely dark and lucious qualities. By renaming this roast, we wanted to ensure pre-conceptions about French roasted coffee weren’t a concern for consumers and make the bold, full-bodied profile take center stage. We aren’t changing the formula, just the name.

Brute’s new bold, black look really represents the coffee’s flavor profile. Brute also is a little cheeky in its French reference to the gorilla, ‘la brute’, and ironically named after the “Brute” buckets we use to transfer or store coffee throughout the roasting process.

Unwind is now, Eventide!

Don’t worry, if you were a big fan of Unwind, this is the same product! With a different name. Nashville’s favorite decaf coffee just got a little facelift.

While taking the time to reassess the Signature Coffee line design and name, we could see a pattern emerging among the coffees. If you think about the coffee line in the context of our all day-cafes, you can see a pattern emerge for a full-day of coffee. Start your day with the Howler or 12South and get a sip in the mid-day with Brunch or Brute. Midshift is perfect for a mid-afternoon kick, and now Eventide will be your non-caffeinated evening (or anytime) sip when you want that delicious coffee flavor.

Seeing the new line together, the half caff and decaf needed a bit more differentiation, so the name Eventide was proposed. It’s a bit of a nod to nautical language for “evening”, but really a good example of when you’re in the groove, no caffeine needed, and just need a little something to enjoy during “smooth sailing”. Unwinding looks different to everyone and coffee might not fit in to that picture, so this new name should give consumers a bit more context to this friendly roast.

We have been waiting for this day to arrive and we are proud to reveal our updated line of signature coffees from Frothy Monkey Roasting Co! We would love to hear your thoughts and welcome your feedback. Take a look at the full line up in our online store!

Want to learn more about the new design? Keep your eyes peeled for a post coming soon on the minds behind the new look for Frothy Monkey Roasting Company Signature Coffees.

Local Nashville Cold Brew Coffee

Posted by on May 2, 2022

The only cold brew coffee roasted, brewed and canned in Nashville, TN.

Why is our Cold Brew So Good?

Locally Roasted Specialty Grade Coffee

No matter what you’re brewing, baking, or cooking the quality of ingredients makes a difference! At Frothy Monkey, we prioritize quality – in experience and in products. In order to bring you the best cup, we only roast and brew specialty grade coffee. This includes any of our cold brew, signature coffees, blends and specialty series coffees.

Coffee beans, just like many other food products, are graded depending on their quality. Specialty grade coffee is the highest bean classification. When coffee is graded, professionals look for consistencies in features like bean shape, size, and ripeness. The more defects in each batch, the lower grade it is given.

Because higher grade coffee requires more care and attention to produce, we have the opportunity to build working relationships with farmers and purveyors that share similar core values, to Frothy. When sourcing our green coffee, we focus on partnering with farmers who practice sustainable farming, fair-trade practices, and unique farming or drying methods.

Locally Produced Cold Brew

While coffee is not a Tennessee crop, it is the home to the roasting, brewing, canning, and distribution of Frothy Monkey Cold Brew! Our product is the only cold brew coffee who’s entire production is done here in Nashville. Of course, we couldn’t do it without our partnership with Jackalope Brewing, who brew and can each can at their brewery right here in Nashville.

You can find Frothy Monkey cold brew at your favorite cafe, and a participating Kroger near you! To make it easy to locate, we’ve created a cold brew locator map. Take a peek at our location pages or locator map to find fresh cans in your neighborhood.

How It’s Brewed

The process of making cold brew coffee is different from quick brewing methods requiring hot water.  General brewing guidelines for coffee and tea suggest the higher the water temperature, the less time it takes to extract the best flavor. Because brewing cold brew coffee steeps in lower temp water, it requires more time.

Cold Brew creates a slightly different flavor profile because the solubles from the grounds are extracted slower. Many people comment that cold brew is smoother, less bitter, and sometimes more sweet than a typical drip brewing method.

There’s a lot of fun science involved in brewing and our Frothy Monkey Roasting Company friends are more than happy to go more in depth about the geeky, albeit cool, chemistry behind it. It’s chemistry and science, and it’s delicious!

Cold Brew Coffee is Great for Most Diets

Need to Stick to Your Diet Plan?

Hot and Humid days call for something refreshing and energizing, but many beverage options are loaded with sugar or calories. Grab a can of Frothy Monkey cold brew to enjoy a refreshing sip without worry of breaking your diet!

Cold Brew is naturally calorie, sugar, and gluten free, which makes it ideal for vegan, paleo, keto, and gluten-free diets. Coffee is also 0 points for Weight Watchers and fits seamlessly into those who follow a mediterranean diet.

Canned Cold Brew Coffee is a Great Travel Partner

Anywhere you can go, cold brew can go, too! The convenience of cold brew cans makes opportunities to enjoy, endless. When packed in a backpack or cooler, don’t forget the ice or cool packs to keep your cold brew fresh. Because cold brew is not carbonated, you won’t have to worry about our product going flat.

Imagine reaching the summit of your favorite hike and cracking open a can to cool down. Maybe you need something refreshing during a long bike ride or a little pick me up to hide in the stroller on a family walk. We see you parents out there!

Coffee’s natural caffeine is a great alternative to energy drinks pumped with artificial sweeteners and flavors. Grab a can or 4-pack before your favorite activity and you’ll be ready to rumble. If you’re close to a cafe, you can always stop in for a cold brew when you dine in or to go! Because most of our cafes have a patio and are close to a neighborhood park, you’re only a few steps away from enjoying your brew in the sunshine.

How to Brew Cold Brew Coffee at Home

While we love seeing your face in our cafe, we understand not all morning routines can accommodate an extra stop. If you’re craving cold brew in your morning routine we can help! To stock up for the week, visit your local cafe on Mondays for $4 off 4-packs of cold brew coffee cans. You can also locate the closest Cold Brew retail partner by using the Cold Brew Coffee Locator Map!

If you want to take matters into your own hands, it’s easy to brew at home! With our Cold Brew Coffee Brewing Guide and a bag of our Cold Brew Blend, you’ll be a few steps closer to building your morning bev like a professional.
