The Hummingbird Latte Returns!
On May 1st we’re bringing back the Hummingbird latte for the ninth year (and counting)! In 2016 we celebrated Southern Living’s 50th anniversary by crafting this delightful latte based on their most searched cake recipe in the South, The Hummingbird Cake. The Hummingbird Latte will be available at all nine Frothy Monkey locations in Tennessee and Alabama from May 1st to June 30th.
The Hummingbird Latte is a tasty combination of pecan and banana syrup, with espresso, steamed milk and topped with cinnamon and a piece of candied pineapple. (hot or iced)
Hummingbird Cake History
The original Hummingbird cake combines ripe bananas, crushed canned pineapple, cinnamon and toasted pecans in the cake batter. Originally submitted to Southern Living in 1978 by L.H. Wiggins of North Carolina, this deliciously southern favorite has been compared to carrot cake in its texture and feature of cream cheese icing. However, the Hummingbird is delightfully sweet and fruity with the warm aroma of toasted pecans for a satisfying crunch. While the original version can be credited to Jamaican culture, as the recipe moved its way to the United States the name “Hummingbird Cake” was coined because the cake was “sweet enough to attract hummingbirds.”
