One of our perennial favorite single-origin offerings from Central Africa has returned. We’ve been buying from the Muungano Cooperative in the Congo for going on six years and over this time we’ve been struck by its year-over-year consistency.
Since 2009, the Muungano cooperative has promoted equality for their farmers and the quality of their coffee. Muungano is the Swahili word for “togetherness” and the Muungano cooperative lives up to its name. Consisting of 4,141 smallholder members — nearly half of whom are women — the cooperative brings women and men from all different ethnic backgrounds together to produce delightful coffee in a country whose reputation is growing for great specialty coffee.
The Democratic Republic of Congo produces exceptional coffees and this natural process lot is one of the country’s best. Coffees from the Lake Kivu Region (Rwanda, Burundi, and Congo) are known in specialty coffee circles for notes featuring red and purple fruits and complex, earthy teas. In this natural lot, we taste notes of Dried Strawberry, Dark Honey, and Rooibos Tea.
What is Single Origin Coffee? Unlike coffee blends, Single Origin Coffee has a single geographic origin. This could be a single farm or a single country. For the majority of these coffees, we will have a direct relationship with the farmer who grows them. Because coffee is a crop, harvesting is seasonal and the timing is specific to each region, our selection of single-origin coffees will vary throughout the year.
To make it extra special, we commissioned local artist, Alicia Binkley of Monkey Ink Design to illustrate our Single Origin labels. Enjoy!
This coffee is sold as Whole Bean to provide you with the freshest product. Please let us know in your order notes if you want your coffee ground.
