Kenya is a highly regarded origin in the world of specialty coffee. It’s a yearly favorite amongst our roasting and quality team due to the unique, exquisite flavors that are nearly impossible to find in other origins.
Our newest offering comes from the Kamwangi Coffee Factory, one of two processing mills run by New Ngariama Cooperative Society in Kirinyaga County. Kirinyaga is located on the slopes of Mount Kenya and is renowned for its amazing coffee quality.
The cherries for this lot were hand sorted for unripe and overripe cherries by the farmers before they went into production at Kamwangi. The pulp (cherry) is removed and the coffee is fermented under shade for 24-36 hours depending on the outside temperature. After fermentation, the coffees are washed and graded by density in washing channels. The coffee is then soaked in clean water overnight, after which it’s taken to drying tables where it will be sun-dried for 12-20 days on African drying beds.
Kamwangi Factory Manager, Lemmy Nyaga, has managed to produce an exceptional coffee that we’re thrilled to share with you. We taste juicy, bright fruits reminiscent of red currants and white grapes. Crisp, herbal notes of lemongrass tea round out the body of this succulent, springtime treat.
What is Single Origin Coffee? Unlike coffee blends, Single Origin Coffee has a single geographic origin. This could be a single farm or a single country. For the majority of these coffees, we will have a direct relationship with the farmer who grows them. Because coffee is a crop, harvesting is seasonal and the timing is specific to each region, our selection of single-origin coffees will vary throughout the year.
To make it extra special, we commissioned local artist, Alicia Binkley of Monkey Ink Design to illustrate our Single Origin labels. Enjoy!
This coffee is sold as Whole Bean to provide you with the freshest product. Please let us know in your order notes if you want your coffee ground.
